Looking for Natural Cat Food

September 9, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I started feeding my cats a raw diet, when one of them developed FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease), and the Vet wanted to put him on an expensive, high grain diet. I had another cat (years ago), who had FLUTD, who went on that food, and gained over ten pounds. In doing my research, I learned that cats are “obligate carnivores”, which means that they were created to eat meat, and not grains. We had been feeding our kitties an organic dry food, that had grains, and the one with FLUTD was a big boned cat, but he weighed too much at 26 pounds. We put them on a modified raw diet, and in the first month he lost five pounds. They have been on this modified raw diet, for about a year, and all three of them have gorgeous coats, lots of energy, and are happy and healthy. We have not had to take them to the vet once. ;D Here is my recipe for Modified Raw Cat Food, with additional information, about some of the things I put in it. Note: I am calling this a “modified raw cat food”, because in addition to the raw meat, it incorporates commercial grain-free dry and canned, to help supply some of the nutrients that a diet consisting of only meat does not have. This gives them a more rounded diet.

Q&A Can’t Seem to Get Rid of Pinworms

July 19, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I’m so sorry to hear, that you are struggling with pinworms.

My first thought, when I read your question, was food grade diatomaceous earth, taken internally, for the entire six week life cycle, of the pinworms.  So I got online, to see if I could find out if I was on the right track.  I found the following board, that discussed ways to eradicate pinworms:

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Gastroenterology/cant-get-rid-of-pinworms/show/632334

I read through the entire forum, and copied the ones, that seemed to be suggestions that might work. As with all health issues, what works for one might not work for another, so having several options, might eventually lead to one treatment that will work.  Something that I noticed, in many of the posts, was that many people used a treatment for a couple of weeks and then would stop, only to have a recurrence.  I really think that any course of treatment should be continued, non-stop, for at least six, if not eight weeks, to assure getting all stages of worm and eggs.

Q&A My mother fell and hit her head, should I be concerned?

July 3, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

My mother fell and hit her head last week.  The doctor said she was fine, but yesterday she told me about how severe her headache had been, the day before.  She did say, that it was better yesterday. Should I be concerned?

Going back to my nursing days, I remember, on occasion, when we had patients, who fell and/or hit their head on something, and would end up, with what is called a “micro intracranial bleed”.  I don’t want to scare you, but to keep you aware, I would like to discuss the signs and symptoms of an intracranial bleed.

Q&A – Any suggestions for a protein shake?

June 22, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I can’t tolerate the Ultra-Clear that I’ve been taking forever, and am allergic to nuts, seeds and most grains… rice is ok though. Any tips would be appreciated!

I make a green smoothie almost every day, and add Chia Seeds, which are high in fiber, protein, Omega 3 and 6, antioxidants and multiple minerals.  I consider it a “super food”.  The mucilaginous coating on the seeds, expand when hydrated, and they create a thicker consistency to your smoothie.  If you can tolerate them, they are a great addition to your smoothie.  You can see the ingredients list here:

http://getchia.com/about-chia/chia-seed-data-and-facts

I also add one of two different sources of plant protein . . . pea protein and brown rice protein.  I prefer to use the unflavored versions of both, because they don’t contain added ingredients, which can increase your chances of reacting. As I said, I use one or the other.  By having both on hand, you can rotate them, causing less chance of developing a sensitivity.

Strategies for Minimizing Toxic Exposure in Your “Personal Space”

June 13, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

It is important to make a concerted effort to eliminate toxic chemicals from your immediate environment.

Fragrances are your enemy. That includes ALL synthetic fragrance/perfumes, and for some, even “natural” fragrances are not safe.  In addition to fragrances, you need to avoid all scented laundry and personal care products, room fresheners, candles and potpourris, furniture polish, cleaning sprays, bug sprays, and home improvement products, including paint, varnish, spackle, drywall/sheet rock, plywood, particle board, vinyl flooring, construction glues and adhesives, even fresh concrete and cement building blocks, used in foundations and basements, new furniture and kitchen and bathroom cabinets and countertops (depending on what they are made from) . . . and the list goes on and on.

Personal care products include hairspray, shampoo, conditioners, mousse, hair gel, hair color, deodorant, face makeup, face soap, toner, bar soap and lotion.  I even had to change my tooth paste and mouthwash, because those made me sick as well.

Q&A I got REALLY sick when I went clothes shopping today. What’s wrong with me?

June 13, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I am going to my daughter’s graduation, from University, this weekend, and went to a large department store, to buy a nice outfit.  In the dressing room, I started sweating really badly.  The heat and humidity were really getting to me, and I started having a panic attack.  I finally left the clothes in a pile, on the floor, because I HAD to get out of there!  My husband said I had an attitude. I said, no I am feeling overwhelmed and miserable.  What is wrong with me???  Oh, and this is a big University, with thousands of graduates in a whole host of different degree programs.  With family members, faculty and graduates, there are supposed to be 40,000 people there.

I’m sorry you got so sick, and so upset, by how you felt.  I am almost certain, that you have MCS!  That was a classic MCS reaction.  It a very similar reaction, that finally clued me in that I had MCS.  The sweating and anxiety are classic MCS “Fight or Flight” reactions. It is your CNS (Central Nervous System) telling you, that you are in a dangerous environment, and you need to get out NOW!!!!!  In addition to sweating and anxiety, it can cause palpitations, elevated blood pressure and high heart rate. Mine used to be in the 100-120 range.  So, tell your husband you were really sick, from toxic exposure.  MCS can cause “toxic brain injury”, which can lead to brain fog, anxiety, agitation, inability to cope, mental confusion, depression, extreme fatigue, inflammation (muscle pain and joint pain and headaches), as well as the CNS symptoms, that I have already mentioned.  It is a real condition with horrible symptoms.

Q&A My daughter is having severe nerve pain. What can we do?

June 1, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I recently had a bout of severe peripheral neuropathy, in both legs and a lesser amount in both hands and lower arms.  It is excruciating.  I was able to manage the pain with three things:

1. Topricin – a Homeopathic Cream, with 12 Homeopathic remedies, including Arnica Montana and Belladonna.  I have found it to be very effective, with muscle spasms, Fibro nerve pain, Lyme nerve pain, and joint pain.

2.  Arnica Montana 30X or C – sublingual tabs  Helps, internally, with the same pains listed in No. 1 above.

3.  Sciatigone – A Homeopathic remedy (drops), that is put in a small amount of water, that you put in your mouth and hold it there, for a minute, so it absorbs through your buccal (or mouth) tissues.  I used this for sciatic pain, a year ago, and it was very effective for that, as well.  I get mine, online, from Native Remedies, http://www.nativeremedies.com/products/sciatigon-soothe-sciatic-nerve.html.

What is MCS?

May 17, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

May is MCS Awareness Month.  MCS is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, AKA Environmental Illness.  If you aren’t sure exactly what this means, please listen to this audio presentation.  It does a great job of explaining how all encompassing and devastating this condition can be.

Q&A What could be causing my migraines?

May 11, 2011, by Claudia No comments yet

I have had a hard go, of it, with certain foods, and migraines.  I had my first migraine in First Grade, but after a full year of migraines, tonsil and adenoidectomy, allergy testing and three different eye exams, they finally figured out I needed glasses, which I got in Second Grade. I was amazed that I could actually see every leaf on the trees!  The migraines did get better after that.

Then I started having debilitating migraines, in 1983.  At that time I was puzzled about where they were coming from, and my doctor was no help, with finding a cause.  Years later, I figured out that they were from several things . . . toxic furniture refinishing chemicals, household cleaning supplies, perfumes, MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) and artificial sweeteners.  I stopped using all artificial sweeteners, and as I became more acutely aware, of how many foods contained MSG, I began to check labels more diligently, and realized that I was inadvertently getting foods with MSG. Autolyzed yeast extract is another name for MSG, as is disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate.
